Kaiserslautern - twin city since 1988
Kaiserslautern is a modern city with tradition, and centre of the West Palatinate region. Past, present and future are a well-functioning symbiosis in the city of 100,000 inhabitants.Kaiserslautern was first mentioned in 882 AD, received the rights to market, customs and monopoly from Otto III in 985 and then went through a turbulent history. In the 20th Century Kaiserslautern developed into the central business location in the Western Palatinate. Drivers for the economy are the technical and scientifically oriented university and the University of Applied Sciences. Meanwhile, more and more companies settling in Kaiserslautern justify their choice of location with the potential of university research related to training and consulting. For all the modernity, Kaiserslautern has preserved a lovable character. Lively sporting and cultural life offers plenty of variety. Guests and residents can find peace just outside the city gates, in the Palatinate Forest Biosphere & Nature Reserve, the largest contiguous forest in Germany.Twinning was initially dominated in the first few years by help from Kaiserslautern in the building of local government in Brandenburg an der Havel. Today, the emphasis has shifted to exchanges in the cultural field, such as cooperation between the schools of music and the carnival clubs.
