In 948 King Otto I founded the Bishopric of Brandenburg, the oldest east of the Elbe river. The 12th Century saw the cathedral chapter of the Norbertine and the Romanesque cathedral as "mother church" of the Brandenburg Mark. The east-enclosure of the former Norbertine monastery building is now a museum with a large treasure of liturgical textiles, altars, books and sculptures from the period between 13th and 16th Centuries. The exhibition initially presents a historical introduction. Facsimiles of important documents, books and documents illuminate the changing history of the diocese and cathedral college from its founding to today. A large area is devoted to the liturgical robes. Over 60 partially richly embroidered and elaborate choir-robes, Chasubles and Dalmatics give an impression of the solemnity of the mediaeval church services. At the same time they bear witness to deep Christian faith and great artistic skill. One of the most important and probably most sensitive exhibits, the Brandenburg Lenten Veil (Hungertuch), a lavish embroidery from the 13th Century, is presented in a separate cabinet.
