The stone gate tower - The oldest museum in the city
The stone gate tower, a masterpiece of medieval architecture, was originally part of the ring of fortifications around the New Town.
The tower is five stories high. The round tower has a diameter of 11.0 m, total height is 31.5 m. The entrance was originally on the first floor, since the tower was used as a watchtower and penitentiary. The stone gate tower is the oldest museum building in the city; it has been used for exhibitions, with some interruptions, since 1887. The stone gate tower today houses an interesting exhibition of the Brandenburg Havel waterways in the 19th and 20th Centuries and the history of the shipbuilding industry in the city. From the battlements of the tower a further panorama of the Brandenburg new town is available.
